As part of Meltzer/Mandl Architects’ 30th anniversary, we are revisiting Melrose Court, one of the firm’s most significant housing developments. Built during a pivotal period in the South Bronx’s redevelopment, the project began with vacant land, tight constraints, and a belief that homeownership could help create something lasting.
Through Marvin Meltzer’s own account, the story traces the thinking behind Melrose Court, from the design of its shared courtyards to the moment he realized the project had become something more than housing. More than thirty years later, it remains a powerful example of how thoughtful design, ownership, and community pride can shape a place.
